Healing While Helping: Showing Up for Yourself During Heavy Times

Caregiving, parenting, teaching—any role that asks us to give our hearts so fully—can be profoundly rewarding, but it can also feel unbearably heavy. There are days when the weight of responsibility, exhaustion, and worry seems endless. On those days, it can feel almost impossible to carve out time for yourself.

I know this well. In my own journey, caring for my mom through Alzheimer’s and more recently my husband after his leg amputation, I’ve faced moments where I thought: If I don’t keep going, everything falls apart. Yet I learned, slowly and sometimes painfully, that showing up for others effectively begins with showing up for yourself—even in tiny ways.

It doesn’t have to be some big, fancy thing. Seriously, even sneaking in a few deep breaths, stepping outside for a quick walk, doing a single round of tapping to shake off the tension, or sipping a cup of tea without scrolling your phone—that counts. I can hear you questioning those tiny little pockets of care? Yes, exactly those, and I would also add, treating yourself to chocolate or 5 minutes of laughing at baby goat reels on Instagram. These are not indulgences, my friend. They’re like hitting the reset button for your brain and your heart. A few minutes here and there, and suddenly you can show up for everyone else without feeling like you’re running on fumes… and maybe even with a little more patience (and sass) to spare.

One simple practice I use is EFT Tapping. Even just a minute or two can ease tension, release worry, and bring a sense of balance when life feels overwhelming. And if you’d like more guided tools to help you show up for yourself consistently,

If you want a few more little helpers to keep your cool while juggling all the caregiving chaos, check out my digital books and free tapping guide. They’re packed with tips, scripts, and exercises to help you find a moment of calm (without losing your mind). You can grab them here on My Website, or snag the paperback editions on Amazon if you prefer a good old-fashioned page-turner..

Remember, no matter how heavy your day feels, showing up for yourself matters. Even small, intentional acts ripple outward—not only easing your own load but allowing you to bring more calm, love, and focus to those you care for.
